You've been missed!

It seems to me that any amount of money received from drug companies creates a conflict if interest for potential prescribers; even trivial amounts will create bias, even if unconsciously.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20491356.post-82437929741612134112007-06-29T06:33:00.000-07:002007-06-29T06:33:00.000-07:00Dr. X:Thanks for bringing this reporting error to ...Dr. X:

Thanks for bringing this reporting error to my attention. I went back through the original report, as well as your own trenchant analysis - and agree with your estimate of $4,000 as the average amount received by psychiatrists last year across the entire state. That's much lower than the figure reported in the Times, but still a nontrivial amount - certainly large enough to exert a potential influence on clinical practice.Psych Pundithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10142192843174514975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20491356.post-80622615831540989192007-06-28T12:32:00.000-07:002007-06-28T12:32:00.000-07:00I'm in sympathy with your concerns, but it looks t...I'm in sympathy with your concerns, but it looks to me like the Times made a serious error in reporting on this story. The $45,000 figure described as the average payment to psychiatrists represents only the average among the top 11 psychiatrists in the state. It is not a statewide average, as the Times article leads one to believe.

I did my own quick and dirty analysis based upon the report issued by the State of Vermont and it looks to me like gifts, education and payments totaling $1000 is probably much closer to typical.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
